"Why? Why this enslavement and destruction of a people? The same old motives which from the beginning have been responsible for all the great world tragedies: human ambition, greed, and selfishness."

Thesis
In 1902, writer and activist, Edmund Dene Morel led the first major human rights movement of the 20th century against King Leopold II's ownership and exploitation of the Congo Free State. Under Morel’s leadership, the Congo Reform Association drew attention to King Leopold’s abuses of the Congo and its people, leading to Belgium taking control of the Congo. His legacy lives on through the work of modern humanitarian organizations that continue to advocate for human rights.
